Complete Guide to Sunscreen

Complete Guide to Sunscreen

We’re all taught the importance of sunscreen during hot, sunny days. However, most of us aren’t aware that sunscreen is just as essential throughout the year to prevent harmful UV rays. Sunscreen can not only help us age more gracefully, but it can prevent life-threating skin cancers caused by UVA/UVB wavelengths.

Fundamentals Med Spa boasts a complete line of powerful sunscreens designed for all skin types, textures, and tones. While you may understand the need for sunscreen, many men and women aren’t sure just how it works or what to look for when selecting the right type for them. That’s why we’ve created this complete guide for everything you need to stay sun-safe this summer and beyond.

How Does Sunscreen Work?

There are two major types of sunscreens; chemical and physical sunscreen. Each work to prevent UVA and UVB rays from doing damage to your skin.

  • Chemical Sunscreens: These types of sunscreens work by absorbing and scattering harsh UV rays. Chemical or organic sunscreens are perfect for daily use due to the thinner easy-to-apply formula. However, you’ll need to wait for approximately 20-minutes for active ingredients to take effect.
  • Physical Sunscreens: Often called sunblock, physical sunscreens create a barrier that filters UV rays before they’re able to penetrate the skin. This sunscreen is ideal for sensitive skin, babies, and women who are pregnant. Sunblocks work immediately after application.

Both types of sunscreens have their advantages. During your in-person consultation, your skincare specialist will help determine which is right according to your individual needs.

What to Look for When Buying Sunscreen

Fundamentals Med Spa offers a full line of dermatologist-recommended sunscreens that check off all the boxes. Forget generic sunscreens with a low shelf-life and opt for a medical-grade sunscreen that will keep you and your family happy and healthy. When looking for sunscreens, choose one that is SPF 30 or higher for maximum efficacy.

  • SPF 30 reflects 96.7% UVB
  • SPF 50 reflects 98% UVB (recommended)
  • SPF 100 relfects 99% UVB rays

While SPF is an important part of choosing a sunscreen, it’s a good idea to make sure your sunscreen is labeled ‘broad spectrum’. The SPF rating only accounts for the amount of UVB wavelengths it blocks. However, both UVA and UVB are known to be cancer-causing.

How Often Should I Apply Sunscreen?

It’s important to apply generous amounts of sunscreen regularly regardless of the season. A full 1-ounce of product is typically needed to achieve maximum protection. Using 25-40% less product means your only getting a quarter of the protection you need from your SPF.

Sunscreens that are not marked ‘water-resistant’ or ‘very water-resistant’ can tend to sweat off within just 10-30 minutes after application. Sunscreens should be applied every 3-4 hours when in direct sun, and all sun-exposed areas should be covered to prevent potential damage.

I have had nothing but great experiences at Fundamentals. Everyone there is honest, professional and very good at what they do. I would highly recommend this place to anyone.
